Trip Description

Dharamshala is a hill station that lies in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh which is graced by its everlasting verdurous landscape. Dharamshala, in the Sanskrit language, means a place to stay during a pilgrimage. The cozy city is a perfect transit for the tired travelers seeking rest in the calmness and peaceful environment before embarking on their journey. The town is distinguished into two regions. Witness majestic views of the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas from Mcleaodganj or upper Dharamshala which lies about 10 kilometers off the lower Dharamshala. Visit Mcleodganj which is an abode to the Tsuglagkhang Complex. The complex is home to the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader and Nobel peace prize winner, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, whose presence has manifolded the importance of this place.

Trek through surrounding jungles with cascades of waterfalls along with swift rivers, and mighty hills touching at Tushita Retreat Centre, Vipassana Meditation, the Dharamkot village towards Triund and the Bhagsu village with its wonderful Bhagasu waterfalls. Meet with the Tibetans at the Tibetan Reception Centre and listen to their stories. Visit the Chamunda Devi temple, the Tibetan Children's village school, the Handicraft-cum vocational Center, St. John in the Wilderness Church, the Nechung (state Oracle) Monastery, the Central Tibetan Administration, the Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute, the Dromaling Nunnery, monasteries in Gyuto, Bir, Tashijong, and Sherabling. Peek into various artworks including thanka paintings, Tibetan tailorings, wood carving, metal works, and doll museum at the Norbulingka Institute. Visit the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives which is vital for the Scholars and the enthusiasts of ancient art and literature.

Important Notes
A permit known as an Inner-Line Permit (ILP) or a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is required to visit Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and certain parts of Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Uttarakhand that lie close to the disputed border with China/Tibet. Nagaland and Mizoram have reintroduced Restricted Area Permits (RAP) for foreign travellers (and Meghalaya and Manipur are considering doing so). Permits are also necessary for travel to the Andaman and Lakshadweep Islands, and some parts of Kutch in Gujarat.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01 : Delhi arrival
Upon arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, we are transferred to the hotel for check-in. Overnight in Delhi.
Day 02 : Fly to Dharamshala; 1.5 hours flight

After early breakfast at the hotel, we are transferred to the airport to board flight for Dharamsala. On arrival at the Gaggal airport, we receive assistance for transfer to our hotel for check-in. After a brief rest, we visit the Tsuglagkhang Complex Dalai Lama Temple, Central Cathedral and Tibet Museum. We are free at leisure in the evening.

Day 03 : Dharamshala

After breakfast, we take a short trek through surrounding jungle touching at Tushita Retreat Centre, Vipassana Meditation, Dharamkot Village towards Triund. We advise bringing bottled water and a packed lunch. A pair of comfortable shoes is recommended to walk around.

Day 04 : Dharamshala to Bhagsu Village

After breakfast, we take a short walk to the Bhagsu village and visit the Shiva temple and Bhagsu waterfall. After lunch, we take a walk to the Tibetan Reception Centre where we can meet with newly arrived Tibetans from Tibet and listen to their stories. We return to Dharamshala in the evening.

Day 05 : Day excursion to Bir

After breakfast, we drive to Bir and visit the monasteries in Bir, Tashijong, and Sherabling. En route, we visit the Chamunda Devi temple. In the evening, we drive back to Dharamshala.

Day 06 : Dharamshala

After breakfast, we drive to the Norbulingka Institute for a peek at various artworks including thanka paintings, Tibetan tailorings, wood carving, metal works, and doll museum. We also visit the Dromaling Nunnery and Gyuto Monastery. After lunch, we visit the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, the Nechung (state Oracle) Monastery, the Central Tibetan Administration, the Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute.

Day 07 : Dharamshala

In the morning, we visit the Tibetan Children's village school, the Handicraft-cum vocational Center, St. John in the Wilderness Church. In the afternoon, we are free at leisure for shopping around.

Day 08 : Dharamshala to Delhi

After breakfast, we depart for the Gaggal Airport to board flight for Delhi. Upon arrival in Delhi, we are transferred to the hotel.

Day 09 : Final Departure
After breakfast at the hotel, we are transferred to the Indira Gandhi International Airport for our final departing flight.

Our accommodation will be on 4-star hotels during the entire trip. We will be staying at the hotels mentioned (or similar), Connaught Hotel (Delhi) and Pemathang House (Dharamsala). If a particular hotel is unavailable during the period of booking then alternative suggestions (along with the surcharge if any) of the same category will be provided.
