The Northern Circuit route offers a nearly 360-degree panoramic view of the rarely visited northern slopes of Kilimanjaro and is considered one of the longest and best routes leading to the summit. The route has the highest success rate due to the longer time allowed for acclimatization and is highly recommended for this reason.
Mount Kilimanjaro is approached from the west using this route. The route begins from the Londorossi Gate. The route leads to the summit through the Shira Ridge and crosses the plateau before heading north from Moir Hut along Buffalo Camp and School Hut. Mweka route is used for descending down.
Upon arrival at the Kilimanjaro International Airport, our local guide will meet and transfer us to Moshi for checking in at the hotel for the night.
Overnight in Moshi. We drive from Moshi to the check-in point at the Londorossi Gate. Day 1 is relatively easy with a three to four-hour climb to Mti Mkubwa Camp.
Overnight at Mti Mkubwa Camp.We walk a few hours to see the end of the forest and the beginning of a climb through heather forest to the edge of the Shira Caldera. The destination is the scenic Shira One Camp.
Overnight at the Shira One Camp.We spend today on a gentle trek across the Shira Plateau with possible side trips to Shira Cathedral. The camp is at the first high camp of Shira Two.
Overnight at the Shira Two Camp.We continue exploring the Shira plateau in its gentle walk east towards Kibo to Moir Hut, a little-used site on the base of Lent Hills, in the afternoon a variety of walking can be made if weather permits for an excellent acclimatization opportunity.
Overnight at the Moir Hut Camp.Today we will have a rather long but at the same time an easy trek. After a short steep climb out of a Moir Valley, we start going around the Northern slopes of Kilimanjaro, the trail with up and down meandering close to Kenya border with scenic views of Amboseli and Tsavo Valleys.
Overnight at the Buffalo Camp. Our Kili Northern Circuit continues to the top of the ‘Buffalo Ridge.' With lunch continue eastwards through the alpine zone with increasingly scattered and rare vegetation. Our day's journey ends after circumventing the northern slopes to reach the Rongai Third Cave Camp. By this stage of the trek, we will be fully acclimatized to the high altitude, which contributes to our general feeling of well-being.
Overnight at the Third Cave Camp. The final leg of the tour is spent on our last ascend to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. We head over to the highlight of our day trek up and over a lunar landscape that lies between the Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks also known as ''The Saddle''. We then head southwest to the School Hut (4,800m) to rest in preparation for the end of our fantastic journey. Our guides will thoroughly check all the gear and supplies in preparation for an early morning start.
Overnight at the School Hut.We will set off by midnight at the latest to reach Gillman's Point by dawn. We will be trekking up scree slopes to the rim where we need to continue around this to reach the summit - Uhuru Peak at 5895m. We take our time to enjoy the incredible view and peace before our descent. We will be heading back towards Millennium Camp down to 3730m for lunch there after heading to Mweka camp 3100m. This whole day, including ascend and descend, is tough and can be up to 12 - 15 hours of trekking. It takes mental preparation and support. It's a tremendous achievement.
Overnight at the Uhuru Peak.We continue our descent across moorland towards Mweka Gate where we can happily know the trekking experience has ended. However, this day is still reasonably strenuous, not least because of the environment which can be wet as we will be returning through the rainforest. Some walkers can also find they go slower when descending, so we do allow for this. We should be aiming for 5/6 hours. Finally, we will be transported accommodation for celebration and relaxation before a well-deserved sleep.
Overnight at the Mweka Gate. After breakfast, we are transferred to the Kilimanjaro International Airport for our final departing flight.
