The Marangu route, popularly known as the "Coca-Cola" route, is the oldest, most well-established route on Kilimanjaro. It approaches the Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast. It is the only route offering sleeping huts in dormitory-style accommodations instead of regular camping. There are about 120 bunk beds at the Horombo Hut and 60 bunk beds each at the Mandara and the Kibo Huts. The huts usually have communal dining halls and basic toilets ranging from flushing toilets with running water at the lower huts and long drop toilets along with buckets of water at the Kibo Hut.
Given its direct path and gradual slope, the Marangu route is considered the most convenient path and highly preferred leading to the summit. The route is also the most crowded for this reason. However, acclimatization might be a little tricky due to the short time frame of ascent through this route. The reason Marangu is considered to be less scenic is due to the ascent and descent routes being the same.
